TORONTO, Ontario, Canada — The
Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) today named veteran
men’s lacrosse official Tom Sutton the Referee in Chief for
the 2014 FIL World Men’s Lacrosse Championships. US Lacrosse
will host the quadrennial event July 10-19, 2014, at Dick’s
Sporting Goods Park in Denver, Colo.
"Tom emerged as the leading candidate from a competitive applicant pool," said Don Blacklock, chair of the FIL Men’s Officiating Committee. "His diverse officiating background and previous international lacrosse experience make him a great fit for this position."
Sutton, 49, served as one of the officials for the 2006 FIL men’s gold medal game in London, Ontario. He has officiated the Major League Lacrosse championship game in each of the last six seasons and in multiple NCAA tournaments and National Lacrosse League playoff games, in addition to various indoor international lacrosse events. Sutton has held leadership positions and membership in numerous lacrosse officiating organizations, including the US Lacrosse Men’s Game Officials Sub-Committee, the US Lacrosse Men’s Collegiate Officials Committee, the Professional Lacrosse Officials Association and the National Lacrosse League Officials Association.
"This is one of the highest honors a lacrosse official can achieve," said Sutton, also an interpreter and a trainer. "I’m looking forward to working with my colleagues to provide the best, fairest officiating we can to the 2014 FIL World Championships."
Sutton grew up in central New York and played lacrosse at Ithaca College. He resides in Eden, N.Y.
